General Education Board

The General Education Board is a campus-wide body established by the Senate and subject to the will of the Senate. The Board’s charge is to oversee the campus general education program in accordance with requirements adopted by the Senate, and to ensure, as much as possible, that general education courses will be valuable intellectual experiences. Additional information available on the Senate Bylaws website.

The General Education Board ensures, as much as possible, that general education courses will be valuable intellectual experiences. Responsibilities include defining the categories of general education requirements for the campus, reviewing course proposals, and reviewing and recertifying all courses approved for general education credit.

The General Education Board Website Box folder includes the list of current board members, schedule of full board meetings, office hour details for the General Education Board Chair, annual charge letter(s), agendas and minutes, and annual report(s). To access the Public Box files you must be logged in with University of Illinois credentials.

Gen Ed Wing Meetings

Beginning AY2023-24, the Gen Ed Board will have a dual-wing structure. Approximately half of the membership will comprise a wing that will review courses, including both those proposals for courses new to General Education and those due for recertification. Review work will be done in subgroups, with materials provided by our office to members, and votes taken at full Board meetings. The second wing, a policy wing comprised of the other half of the Board, will focus efforts on ongoing policy issues that relate to and impact the general education program on our campus.

Gen Ed Wing Meetings are closed to Gen Ed Board members and invited guests only. Items will move from the Gen Ed Wing Meetings to the Gen Ed Full Board Meetings open to the campus community.

The proper distribution of seats on the General Education Board will be subject to revision by the Senate as enrollment trends change and additional colleges assume responsibility for General Education courses. Expand the list below to view current membership.
